Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is Safeway now asking schools/groups to allocate 20% of their Safeway donations towards Fitness and Nutrition activities?
A: Safeway wants to do what we can to help every child stay fit and have access to nutrition programs.  By requiring  groups to allocate 20% of their Safeway donations toward Fitness and Nutrition activities, we help to ensure that the funds we donate are supporting this important Safeway priority.

Q: Which groups are being asked to allocate 20% toward Fitness and Nutrition activities?
A: Safeway believes fitness and good nutrition are a universal priority and we are asking all groups receiving donations from the Safeway eScrip program to participate.

Q: How is the 20% allocation amount for Fitness and Nutrition activities determined for the 2010/2011 school year?
A: Groups can estimate their 20% amount using the group's 2009 earnings as a baseline.  For example, if a group earned $10,000 in 2009, they can determine that their Fitness and Nutrition annual allocation would be $2000 (20% of the $10,000). If a group is likely to reach the $25,000 cap, the 20% annual allocation would be $5000.  A group coordinator can view their allocation amount on the Safeway Reporting Tool section.

Q: What if I am a new school/group to the Safeway eScrip program?
A: As a new participating school/group, you will also be asked to report your Fitness and Nutrition activities. Watch this short video to learn how to use the reporting tool.

Q: How do groups report their 20% spending toward Fitness and Nutrition activities?
A: All program information and reporting tools are available at groups.escrip.com on the Safeway information page. The reporting tool allows groups to input their spending against Fitness and Nutrition related activities on a monthly basis and track their progress towards their 20% allocation goal. Watch this short video to learn how to use the reporting tool.

Q: What expenditures qualify for the 20% Fitness and Nutrition annual allocation?
A: Click here for a list of Fitness and Nutrition activities that are applicable toward the 20% allocation.

Q: Why do groups need to report monthly on this allocation activity?
A: In order to keep the program visible to the groups and their coordinators, Safeway believes it is important to have monthly reporting -- even in months where there are no Fitness and Nutrition activities.  It also helps the groups track year over year.

Q: Can a group report a budgeted amount that is not yet spent on an activity? (e.g. the group is saving the $ to build a new gym)
A: In order to qualify, the amount reported needs to be an actual expenditure for qualifying activities.

Q: If a group does not allocate 20% towards Fitness and Nutrition activities, what will happen to that funding?
A: Safeway is committed to helping every child stay fit and have access to nutrition programs and strongly encourages groups to allocate the requested funding.  Currently, there are no consequences for non-compliance. However, Safeway will evaluate the program on an annual basis and potentially make adjustments to ensure continued success.

Q: What role will Fitness and Nutrition activities play in the eScrip program long term?
A: Starting in August of 2011, all groups earning funds from Safeway will be required to allocate and report 20% of their Safeway earnings toward Fitness and Nutrition Activity. For the reporting period of August 2011 through June 2012, groups will be given a grace period. For the reporting period of August 2012 through June 2013, groups that do not allocate and report 20% of their Safeway funding each month, will be at risk of losing this funding.

Q: Why do we need to submit the name of our Treasurer/Finance Director?
A: In case we have any questions about the submission, we can contact this person to verify.
